Cold Weather Rule ( ANNUAL NOTICE TO ALL RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS)
Bills can pile up like snow, but the Minnesota cold weather rule is designed to protect people who may have trouble paying their utility bills in the winter. The Minnesota cold weather rule applies from October 15 - April 15. The rule, established by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, means that your utility company cannot disconnect your residential electric service during the winter IF THE CUSTOMER MEETS THESE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Utility disconnection would affect the customer’s primary heat source;
2. The customer has declared inability to pay on forms provided by the utility company (note: customers receiving “any form of public Assistance,” including energy assistance, are deemed to have qualified for inability to pay status);
3. The household income of the customer is less than 50% of the state median income level, as documented by the customer to the utility; and,
4. The customer’s account is current for the billing period immediately prior to October 15 or the customer has entered into a payment schedule and is reasonably current with payments under the schedule. If you have trouble paying you bill, local agencies may be able to provide assistance. The State Dept. of Human Services recommends you call the county in which you live. If you know you are going to have trouble paying your utility bills, please contact the Lake Park Public Utilities at 218-238-5532 to try to work out a payment schedule to avoid disconnect. The City of Lake Park tries to make every effort possible to help utility customers in this situation.
Electric Water Heater Controls?
Customers with ripple controls should contact the Lake Park Public Utilities if they have problems with their water heaters. This may save the expense of a service call in the event the problem is with the ripple control. Please call 218-238-5532 or 218-238-5337 after hours.
Storage Fuel
If you currently have dual fuel, please check to see if your back-up system is working properly. Customers who wish to apply for dual fuel can contact the City Clerk's office for the application form. Duel fuel only applies to customers who have two separate heating sources, EACH of which can heat the entire building.
Sump Pump Alerts
Please check your sump pump to see that it is working properly and is not discharging into the sanitary sewer system. There is an ordinance prohibiting this, which carries substantial penalties. For information, contact Don Qualley at (218)238-5337.
Utility Budgets
Utility Budgets begin in May. The budget rate will be a set amount based on an average of your past year's utilities. This allows for a customer to pay the same amount throughout the year making those higher winter months easier to manage. For more information, please call the City Offices at 218-238-5532.
Please Note: If you are planning on digging on your property call Gopher State One at 1-800-252-1166 at least two days before you dig. (There is no charge for this service) This includes planting trees, shrubs, mailboxes and any other type of digging into the ground. You will need: Name, Phone, Address, Dig Location, Nearest intersections, Start date, Type of work and time.
